Keep On Running

Howdy folks. After a decent lapse, I’d like to bring you tales of a brilliant weekend in Fairchildland. DW, Sam Nice and myself are taking Bessie back to Beantown right now and I’ve been tasked to pick up the blog mantle after too many days of letting this thing go. We just went through a toll, paying the 60 cent charge with a five dollar bill. The operator looked at us as he made our change and stated plainly to Sam, who was in the driver’s seat in pure fact only: “You need a receipt.” It wasn’t a question.

Outdoor Festivals

We played at the Psyforia Festival yesterday and what a fun time we had! The event was held at the American Legion in Cambridge, outdoors, right next to the Charles River. I should mention that it was pretty hot yesterday. I never saw a thermometer, but I’m pretty good at guessing these things and I would estimate we were in the low to mid nineties (that’s Fahrenheit, by the way). That river started looking pretty good after a few minutes performing in direct sunlight, but not one for swimming in city rivers, we stayed ashore, played our funk music to a festival crowd and had a whale of a time.

We were invited to the event by our close friend and original Jive Sucka! Ammon EP, who is a terrific dj, an emerging producer and unbelievable hooper. That’s with a hula hoop for those of you unfamiliar with the fad. (I call it a fad not to be derogatory, but because when I was taught the word ‘fad’ in elementary school, the hula hoop was the example that we were given. In fact, whenever I think of the word, an image of plastic tubular ring, often in bright shades of orange, pink and green, comes to mind.) So, listen, I’m serious: Ammon is unbelievable with a hoop. The whole phenomenon is so much more developed than I previously realized. In fact, there were quite a few people hooping at the event and they were all pretty much amazing.

And there was food (thanks Heidi!) and more music and a great crowd. There were friends and family. Not to rub it in, but I really don’t know how you missed it. (Did I mention we performed?)

Speaking of which…

Buttons

Buttons_craquelure

I did not expect buttons to be the enduring important topic from tonight’s installment of Miss Fairchild Presents The Miss Fairchild Show at Great Scott in Allston, but I’m glad they are as they have a special significance for me.

We all have “nervous” habits. Some people bite their nails, some people twirl their hair. I, apparently, unfasten and refasten the buttons on my shirt and vest. I didn’t know about this habit until a few weeks ago when our friendly neighborhood lead-singer Daddy Wrall pointed it out to me. I don’t mind so much, really. There are many other nervous habits I could have (and I’ve tried most of them) that are be more damaging and evoke more concerned looks from my fellow man. (Who am I kidding? I’m talking about concerned looks from women.)

Celtics Training Camp

okay, so this isn’t a sports blog and i’m not going to talk about the c’s. i am, however, going to shout out christopher rockswell, aka develin of develin and darko, who recently moved up here and was sporting a pretty fly c’s hat. he’s from baltimore and no one expects him to work any bullets gear (esp. since the bullets had two failed attempts at existing are now the wizards of all teams.) so welcome to beantown chris.

well, show with spankro was pretty slamming. big thank you to everyone that came out. as you can see, there are changes, surprises, moments of awe and wonder. ups to chris (soundguy), ronnie, spankrock, paserock, ben (happy birthday) and others. for those of you who weren’t able to get tickets: we’ll be back soon, i promise.

in the meantime, go root for the celtics, they need it right now. (there’s always hope, though, especially with such a young team.)

???????

Why has it taken me so long to post a blog entry? It’s not for lack of something interesting to say. We’ve played a number of fantastic shows lately, at AS-220, Sin-e and most recently Bubba’s Sulky Lounge, the first two with our very dear friends Get HIm Eat Him and the most recent with the inimitable Slowing Room and the family’s own Lipschitz, of Bad News Jones fame. Those of you who STILL haven’t checked out his music head over to myspace.com/jedsed immediately. You can finish reading my ramblings another time.

We’ve also put in many many many hours in the studio, recording our best music to date: a second full-length entitled “Ooh La La, Sha Sha…” To give you a sense of things, after I finished tracking all of the rhythm tracks (bass, guitars and keyboards with P.Nice on the drum tracks) we just layered a six piece horn section on the whole album. Yes, the whole album. Sooner than later we will also have a few of these tunes sprinkled throughout the live show.

And there are many other interesting topics to cover, including the Grammys, which performance-wise may have been the best ever. There is a new Prince album, which is fantastic, especially the MF favorite, “Lolita.”

My thinking is this: How about you give me a free pass on the lack of interesting updates, and I’ll start writing more? Maybe we can find out what happens when keepin’ it real goes right.

pre-holiday greetings

Hpfronts

Well, Miss Fairchild was firing on all cylinders this weekend.

We rolled through our best Boston show to date. Thanks to Great Scott and all the fans who came from near and far for making that happen. (And Jon- you get the MVP trophy…) Certified Bananas, Big Digits and Hott Beat all killed it as expected.

Samuel P. Nice and the Great Dunlap mastered their newest EP, to be released under the name ‘Spinning’ very soon. It sounds great and we’re sure you’ll love it. Those of you who played on the record will be getting copies soon.

We enjoyed a wonderful show at Space in Portland. Woopla Fauna (Sontiago, Moshe and Erin Davidson) were excellent. We are so lucky to have shared the stage with you. Thanks to Todd, Todd and Ryan for their help organizing the show.

And we saw the release of not one, but two (2!) new records: The Housing Prodgect EP and Lipschitz: Jed Sed, our Christmas and Hannukah offerings, respectively. They are both available online and for a special holiday price. Early reports are very positive so get ‘em while you can. The Housing Prodgect disc is limited edition and includes the much asked-for tracks “It’s Your World” (the peppermint stick song) and “Starstruck” (the mirror song). “Jed Sed” is the first solo full-length by Nantucketastrophe poet laureate Lipschitz. Miss Fairchild produced the entire record collectively and individually and we’re really proud of it. Check out a couple of tracks at myspace.com/jedsed

Well, have a great holiday everyone. I’ll be sure to give updates as they come up.

T.G. Dunlap
