Fernie, British Columbia is one of those places where you walk outside (or look out the window, for that matter) and say, “Wow.” The mountains are all around us and beautiful; the town is very cozy and nestled right in the middle of them. We arrived to much fanfare (parades, the presentation of the key to the city, a champagne reception. You know, the usual) and without too much Bessie trouble. We have forsaken the air conditioning completely and we’re not loosing too much coolant. We filled up what we had lost, including the reservoir, which Jiffy-Lube filled with washer fluid instead of anti-freeze, by the way. Perhaps we should have been watching them instead of getting our hippie on with the hacky-sack…
Much of van time is spent listing our 10,000 things, and though we are all supremely confident that there are, indeed, 10,000 of these things, our list has not reached the higher numbers yet. I neglected to share any things in the last entry, so I’ll make up for it now:
A few of y’all have asked about this, so I have to let you in on it. In the tracklisting on the back of OLLSS where, the number six happens twice: once for track six and once instead of five. There is a reason for this, and I’ll explain it now:
We rolled into one of our favorite cities, Chicago, on time for a soundcheck for which we were sure we would be late. (Thank goodness for time zones!) Of course, Bessie is largely un-parkable in these densely populated cities, but we managed to find a paid spot in a nerby lot, said “the heck with it,” and splurged. Despite some confusion about how this gig was to go down, we managed to load-in and sound check with relative smoothness. Before that happened, I had to find a way to post our last blog entry, so I crouched down on the sidewalk next to a coffee shop and borrowed their connection. Sitting there on the concrete at dusk, uploading photographs and editing the blog, I was the object of not a few stares and comments. One guy thought that I was surfing for pornography, which I let him believe and worse, “Yeah. It’s amazing. You can upload from anywhere now. Wanna come look?” That did away with that “conversation.” It has been a significant subplot, though, this search for an internet connection. Most people with laptops have logged on at a stop light, sending an e-mail or pulling up the Times to find out about the latest catastrophes, but since my promise to get an update on here everyday (and occasionally twice), it has been a particular focus of mine to find a WiFi signal anywhere I can. And on to real information…
After our all night drive into the U.S. and down to Columbus, Ohio from Ottawa, we stopped at the motel (Gotta splurge once in a while- as long as by splurge we mean five guys in one motel room) to take a swim and a shower and headed to Oldfield’s Bar & Grille. I wish I had it together to take some photos of this joint, but being a little under the weather, I wasn’t really on my game. Perhaps a description will suffice:
Here I am in Montreal, friends, in the most excellent apartment of our musical and personal host Louis-Marc, aka DJ Truspin. I’m typing as quietly as I can because the rest of the band is still sleeping. We had a late night last night playing our first ever Montreal show…
I know that you all want to hear about the really nice girl who made us really good sandwiches, despite having a lot of trouble cutting the meat out of avocados, but I really only want to talk about one thing right now…
Yeah! You can buy Ooh La La, Sha Sha… on iTunes now. In the words of Lindsay Buckingham, “Do it! Do it! Do it!”
They say it takes a village to raise a child, and I say it’s the same with a band. You, faithful readers, are that village, and we are that child. So, raise us. Communicate to the world your thoughts about Miss Fairchild and we will all be better for it! Here is what I ask…
Okay, so that Boston CD release party was fantastic! Many thanks to everyone who came out and supported. You made the night very special. We were sooo happy to see the extended family show up and dance and sing along. You got a taste of the beginning of the next stage for us and yo made it great. For those of you who missed it, so be it. Some interesting tidbits include:
Boston Now really likes Ooh La La, Sha Sha… So there.
Sidekick has a photo of us, too. Thanks Boston, for taking notice!
So much has happen in my absence from this little journal. We announced the dates of our midwestern/Canadian tour, we bought a van (more on that later), we were interviewed on the radio, we scaled a very large mid-Manhattan building, we explored some Bolivian silver mines, we starred (and did our own stunts) in a major motion picture and we won the lottery for the largest quilt ever made! Some of that is even true! And also…
So says Sam Pfeifle of the Portland Phoenix.

August 2007
Miss Fairchild, the Boston-based Pop-Funk band, announce the release of their sophomore long-player Ooh La La, Sha Sha… on Tuesday, September 4, 2007. With a style that distills the best funk and pop music from the past thirty years into a fresh new sound, the album fuses the band’s flair for spectacle with a genuine knack for what works.
Well, well, well. It seems that Miss Fairchild was on television yesterday. (I say “seems” not because I didn’t know, but beacuse I can’t believe it was yesterday. Time flies when you’re playing funk music!) We stopped over at the Plum TV ‘Morning, Noon & Night’ Show while we were waiting for the ferry, and looking each 1/3 cowboy and 2/3 dapper (that’s a whole lot of fly, by the way), were recruited to take their program home for them. So, if you missed it live (it was live! Did I mention that?), see it now and let them know what you think.
[It’s just Miss Fairchild, by the way. You’ll have to go to Youtube if you want to see The Miss Fairchild Show.]

Hey people. Want free music? Well, here it is:
Number One, free for download: Music For Robots
Vanilla Place, free for download: Idolator
Many of you have been writing lately to ask what is afoot here at Camp Fairchild; in fact, we have been overwhelmed with inquiry, comment and plea. Well, today I, Schuyler Dunlap, your Original Homemade Superstar, write to you to answer your pleas, allay your fears and relieve your stresses.
After very nearly 2 full years of joy and pain, Daddy Wrall, Samuel P. Nice and myself have completed the final mixes on the much anticipated Ooh La La, Sha Sha. Indeed, the release of our sophomore offering is nigh.
Now, by “nigh” I mean a couple of months away. There are a few loose ends to be completed on the musical and non-musical aspects of the record, but we are closer than ever. In fact, a number of recordings will be leaked over the following months, being made available on the website and at a number of promotional mixtapes to be released at future shows. Look out for these surprises as a limited edition thank-you to those of you who choose to spend your evenings getting down to our music. (As a side note, I hope all of you that picked up a copy of the first installment in this series last month in Boston are enjoying the remarkable work of our very own Samuel P. We think he’s pretty special.)
Okay, okay. Here’s what’s up:
Shows are great. New York really stood up on Friday for our show with the peerless Don Dilego. Daddy Wrall and I “sat in” for a tune off his most recent record, Photographs of 1971 (hint: buy it). From hearing the new tunes, sooooo many of you have been clamoring for a copy of Ooh La La, Sha Sha… which is as yet unavailable. Let me say this as a teaser: something off this record will become available soon. The form and location of this music is undetermined, but we will put something in your hands, believe me.
And Portsmouth, NH: oh how we love thee! Let me count the ways. Can’t wait to get back to the Red Door. See you soon, I hope.
For those of you that braved the rain and cut countless costumed celebrations in favor of getting down mf style: you win. We concede victory.
Many highlights from the weekend, but allow me to relate one in particular:
Well, it looks like I missed that ever important next day window for recapping Miss Fairchild’s recent strong. You see, I spent nearly the entirety of Thursday, Friday and Saturday awake, and come Sunday, there were not enough remaining braincells to form one complete sentence, let alone several complete sentences to make paragraphs and such. Well, now we’re at Wednesday and I still have doubts about the projected coherence of my ramblings, but here I go anyway…
Or weeks more like it. The last three strongs have been all about the stamina show for Miss Fairchild. To those of you that have been persistently requesting a new blog posting, I apologize for taking so long. Here’s what’s up:
So, we made it.
This far at least: San Francisco! Daddy Wrall’s first steps in California were glad ones as we spent many many hours in the car leading to this moment. His first question, “Where can we get some motherlovin’ Rice-a-Roni?” Suggestions anyone?
