In my last blog entry, I spoke of possible tour mvps. One such candidate was that first meal of the day: breakfast. On many days I don’t eat breakfast, which is odd since it’s my favorite meal; in fact, I haven’t once eaten before noon since we finished our tour. Until this morning, that is. I woke up way too early today, after far less sleep than necessary. It wasn’t my intention to do so, but the moon, while beautiful, was just too doggone bright, dagnabit. Anyhow, breakfast ensued, and while nothing to write home about in and of itself, certainly got me thinking about Miss Fairchild’s favorite breakfast joints. We always do a top six around here, since that’s my particular number (do you remember that little tidbit about OLLSS’s tracklisting?)and well, I’m the one writing this blog, so I’ll certainly list six places. In fact, though, this is really a top five with one honorable mention. You’ll see why shortly.
Wrall has spoken. About his favorite things. Apparently ice cream is number one. Who knew?
Despite having no pressing news and no fun travel stories about cheese and car trouble, I find myself with the time and the readership to necessitate frequent updates to this here blog.
[Ed. No pressing news, you say! What about the impending release of Ooh La La, Sha Sha… ??? That’s not pressing?]
Yeah, yeah, we’ve promising that for years.
[Yes, but this time it’s really happening. CD release parties have been announced in Boston, Providence, Portland, Nantucket & New York. There’s even a tour planned!]
Okay, fine, but that’s not why we’re here.
You see, I get requests to hear about the ins and outs of Miss Fairchild and believe me, I’d like to tell you. I’m sure you’d love to know that Samuel never finishes his breakfast or that Daddy Wrall uses seventeen feet of floss whenever he cleans his teeth. Maybe you want to know about Trick and Rocket’s sneaker preferences (they like shoes better, I reckon). Or maybe you want to know about me. I am, after all, your humble (laugh if you want, I won’t be sore) tourguide on this homemade rollercoaster called Miss Fairchild. Okay, fine, you don’t want to know about me…
I’m cool with that. This is a blog about the group, after all. What is Miss Fairchild like? What does Miss Fairchild like? (Well, the abstract answer to those questions will be answered soon in another blog.) As far as specifics go, however, I can say with a fair amount of certainty that we like The Band.
For those of you who don’t know, Prince has a new album out: 3121. It was released on March 21st (3/21) and early returns are positive. It is certainly better than Musicology, my be better than Rainbow Children, and may even be his best effort in fifteen years. “Black Sweat” and “Lolita” bring us back all the way to Prince’s Dirty Mind days, (hopefully) reminding or educating a new generation about where producers such as the Neptunes got theirs. Makes you want to look at his career, doesn’t it? Let’s try that…
A few weeks ago, Daddy Wrall and I began to solidify a long-debated list: Prince’s top six albums. Attempting to take into account artistic merit, critical acclaim, chart success, historical importance and most importantly, personal opinion, we went about ordering those albums that we considered his undeniable best. Some will balk at this list. We are too young to remember the debut of many of these works and did not have the knowledge or historical perspective to understand their impact at the time for any of them. When “Dirty Mind” hit the airwaves in the early 80’s, its stripped-down, one man funk must have been shocking next to the slick production of the disco of the day. Though we can understand this, we didn’t live it (at least consciously), so please save your critiques. If Dubs and I know anything, we know funk, and we can rate Prince compared to himself. That’s all we intend to do here.
(You might be asking, “Why top six?” And though, I know top five is more typical, I’m more into six. It fits better.)
